Naturally, there are so many options for termite control treatments. Each treatment varies in how well they work and how much they cost. In Southern California, there are two major termite treatment categories available for drywood termite control at home. They are Local Treatments and Whole Structure treatments. Read on to find out all about them and how to best protect your home from termites.

1. Local Treatments

  • Local treatment products greatly vary. The most popular ones you have probably heard of are marketed as Orange Oil, Termidor, and Alticet. If you want to find out whether orange oil works, click here and read on.
However, here’s a spoiler alert for those who cannot wait to find out on their own – the only real green product that works is Altricet! Even though there are so many different local termite control treatment products on the market, the method of application for all of them is practically the same.

  • Simply put, local treatment refers to treating one or more isolated areas or wood members. This entails drilling holes into termite infested wood members and injecting the product directly into the wood.
  • The idea is for the product to travel through the galleys created by termites and reach the colony. The product will further exterminate the colony in the infected wood member.
  • Because local treatments are applied directly to termite infested wood, it does not require you to leave your home at any time during or after the treatment. Besides the wood member and areas being treated, your home is not in any way directly exposed to the termite control products that are being applied.
  • This method is best for homes with minor to medium termite infestations in accessible areas or wood members of your home. See here what to expect on your local termite treatment appointment.

2. Whole Structure

  • In California, there are only two methods that are recognized by the state as whole house or whole structure termite eradication. Those two methods are whole-house Heat treatment and Fumigation or tenting. In most cases, reputable termite control service providers will tell you that no local treatment product can replace or even come close to matching the reach of whole-house heat treatment or fumigation.
  • In either whole-structure heat treatment or fumigation enough heat or fumigant respectively is applied in order to fill all the airspace that your entire house takes up. This means that the termite control operator isolates your home by covering it a tarp and, depending on the service, applying enough heat or fumigant for enough time into the entire space your house takes up. That also means that the termites ANYWHERE within the tarp would be exterminated reaching 100% eradication of termites anywhere in your home.
  • It’s very important to say that the difference between local treatments and whole structure treatment methods is that local treatments are only as good as the termite problem is accessible for treatment. On the other hand, whole structure is a catch-all guaranteed to eradicate all drywood termite infestations in your home. For more details see how fumigation works.

  • This method is definitely the best for homes with medium to major termite infestations. It’s also especially recommended for homes with termite infestations that are inaccessible for local treatment.
