Have you ever wondered how to get rid of pesky ants while avoiding pesticides? If you live in Southern California, you know that ants can be a nuisance.
They are persistent and sometimes difficult to get rid of.
The key to controlling an ant problem is to prevent the ants from finding their way into your home.

Here are two important tips for temporarily getting rid of ants and they only require everyday household products instead of pesticides.
Step #1 – Eliminate the Scent Trail
- The first thing you want to do is erase the pheromone trail to prevent having an entire colony follow the ant you see and invade your home.
Ants follow a pheromone track laid by a few scavengers towards a suspected food source.
As soon as you see the ants, try and take notice of where they are coming from and where they may be going.
Once you have a general idea of their path into your home and where they are trying to go, take window cleaner and paper towels or a rag and wipe the area down using the glass cleaner.
Doing this wipes away the pheromone track helping to prevent having hundreds of ants follow the few you see. However, it does not prevent scavengers from reentering and lying down a new pheromone track.
Step #2 – Keep Ants Out!
- To prevent scavenger ants from re-entering your home, take liquid dish soap and use it to create a barrier in the entry points the ants are using.
When ants walk up to the dish soap, they will turn and run. Then, they avoid it like the plague.
Doing these two things will help to get rid of ants and prevent them from coming back into your home.
You can reclaim your counter spaces immediately.
Dealing With An Infestation
Although these tips for getting rid of ants usually work, they may not be enough for an aggressive colony or in peak season. You may find yourself repeating these steps every two hours.
Unless you do something to control the ant colony itself, ants will continue to find new places to enter your home.
To achieve long-term ant control, you should find a pest control professional that can create a customized pest control program using family and pet-friendly products with high residual for long-lasting results.
