Subterranean Termite Control Treatment Methods
Subterranean Termite Control Treatment Methods, now Subterranean termites are not discussed as much as drywood termites in Southern California, but they are certainly here and could very well infest your home.
Drywood termite control treatments, no matter how far reaching they are, will not work to control subterranean termites in your house. See drywood termite treatment types. There is an inherent difference between drywood termites and subterranean termite colonies that makes it necessary to approach each infestation differently in order to eliminate the colony.

There is an inherent difference between drywood termites and subterranean termite colonies that makes it necessary to approach each infestation differently in order to eliminate the colony.
Basically, drywood termites need wood to live, work, and eat. Subterranean termites are different. They are more like you and me. Their homebase is separate from where they work and eat.
Drywood termite treatment services only reach the subterranean termites that happen to be “at work” at the time of treatment.
A subterranean termite colony can be anywhere from 1-20 feet underground and up to a 70-foot radius from where you actually see them in your home.
It is conceivable that subterranean termites could be eating away at wood while the colony producing the termites could be across the street under your neighbors home. This is what makes them harder to treat.
Popular Options for treating subterranean termites are:
- Trench treatments
- Rod treatments
- Slab treatments
All of these treatments except subterranean termite bait stations basically work using the same theory. What you are doing is introducing termite control products into the soil around the perimeter of your home.
Depending on how much soil and slab is around your home, trenching in the soil or drilling into slab may be necessary to reach the soil under your home for treatment.
Essentially, the idea is that the products create a protective barrier that termites will come in contact with as they travel between your home and their home colony.
The product is not a noxious immediate kill, instead, the product is ingested by the termites and lives in them for a time allowing them to share the product with the termites they come in contact with when they make it back home to the colony. After a little time, enough of the colony gets infected by the product. The product disrupts their metabolism and leads to death, thus eliminating the colony.
Termite bait stations operate in a similar way. They are small stations placed around the perimeter of your home and have a product that both attracts subterranean termites to the bait station and is meant to exterminate them as well.
Subterranean bait stations require regular monthly maintenance and check backs by a professional to work best, whereas the other treatment methods require reapplication roughly once a year. See do subterranean termite bait stations work.
The best subterranean termite treatment methods are those that are part of a customized plan for your home.
