A German cockroach infestation can occur rather quickly if proper precautions are not taken. German cockroaches produce a large number of eggs and reach sexual maturity rather quickly, causing rapid population growth. A cockroach infestation can be quite damaging, particularly the German cockroach, due to the diseases carried on the legs and bodies. A German cockroach may transmit various forms of gastroenteritis diseases, such as: food poisoning, dysentery, diarrhea, and other illnesses. The organisms causing these diseases can be deposited on food, counter tops, utensils, and other areas where food is prepared.
The best way to rid your home of these difficult insects is to first do a thorough inspection of the area. Then, placing traps to determine the extent of the infestation. Usually a week of trapping at a sufficient number of trapping sites (ten or more) provides sufficient information for effective control. A key factor in prevention is sanitation. Always clean up food on counters and sweep up crumbs on the floor. Do not leave dirty dishes over night and store pantry items in sealed containers. Furthermore, empty your garbage regularly, specifically the kitchen and bathroom containers. Do not bring any items from the garbage into your home as they may harbor roaches.
