German Cockroaches

by Backstage PC | Single Family Home | 0 comments

The German cockroach is best known for its small size and by two dark parallel lines running from the back of the head to the wings. It is tan to light brown in color and is the most common in houses and restaurants because they prefer to be in areas where food is prepared. Grease, starches, sweets, and meat products are the items they are most fond of. German cockroaches get their principal food source from garbage cans or inside kitchens if they manage to enter the building. Unfortunately, they’re flat bodies allow them to move in and out of cracks and narrow openings with no problem. They are mostly active at night and hide behind appliances or in cracks and crevices during the day.

German Cockroaches

A German cockroach infestation can occur rather quickly if proper precautions are not taken. German cockroaches produce a large number of eggs and reach sexual maturity rather quickly, causing rapid population growth. A cockroach infestation can be quite damaging, particularly the German cockroach, due to the diseases carried on the legs and bodies. A German cockroach may transmit various forms of gastroenteritis diseases, such as: food poisoning, dysentery, diarrhea, and other illnesses. The organisms causing these diseases can be deposited on food, counter tops, utensils, and other areas where food is prepared.

The best way to rid your home of these difficult insects is to first do a thorough inspection of the area. Then, placing traps to determine the extent of the infestation. Usually a week of trapping at a sufficient number of trapping sites (ten or more) provides sufficient information for effective control. A key factor in prevention is sanitation. Always clean up food on counters and sweep up crumbs on the floor. Do not leave dirty dishes over night and store pantry items in sealed containers. Furthermore, empty your garbage regularly, specifically the kitchen and bathroom containers. Do not bring any items from the garbage into your home as they may harbor roaches.
